# April Fishing in Freeport: Peak Cobia and Spring Nearshore

April fishing in Freeport hits the spring peak. Cobia stack on the jetties and nearshore platforms in their best month, king mackerel arrive, and inshore redfish and trout fish hard on warming flats. The nearshore action is excellent and the weather is finally cooperating for consistent runs.

April is the marquee month for [cobia](/species/cobia/) on the Brazosport coast. The run peaks now, with fish holding around the Freeport jetties, buoys, and nearshore rigs in good numbers. Sight-casting to surface cruisers with bucktails, live eels, or large soft plastics is the classic approach, and a hooked cobia gives one of the best fights in nearshore water. King mackerel also move in this month, hammering trolled spoons and ribbonfish on the nearshore reefs.

Inshore fishing rounds into peak spring form. [Redfish](/species/redfish/) work the flats and marsh edges, and [speckled trout](/species/speckled-trout/) are aggressive on warming grass flats; early-morning topwater action can be outstanding. April is one of the best months of the year to catch a wall-hanger trout before the summer heat.

As the water warms toward the 70s and cleans up, the first [Spanish mackerel](/species/spanish-mackerel/) and [pompano](/species/pompano/) show at the jetty and in the surf guts; a silver spoon on a wire leader is the jetty standard for mackerel. Clean green water is the precondition, and a hard southeast wind shuts it down, so time the jetty around the calm, clear days.

With more settled weather, the first real offshore windows open up, though the marquee offshore season is still a couple of months away. For now, the nearshore grounds are the sweet spot, productive, close to port, and reachable on a half-day trip.
