Cobia Fishing in Freeport, Texas
A hard-fighting spring visitor that stacks near the jetties and rigs March–May.
About the cobia
Cobia (ling) are powerful, curious nearshore fish that follow the first warm fronts of late winter north along the Texas coast. They are an underrated early-season target around Freeport that few local guides write about.
Where to find them in Brazosport
The Surfside jetty in spring, nearshore rigs 8–15 miles out through May, and color breaks 30–50 miles offshore into summer. They travel in small groups along rip tides and current seams.
When they're in season
March through May is peak. The first warm fronts push cobia north, and by late April they stack near the jetties and the first set of offshore rigs.

How charters target them
Cobia are sight-fished from the boat. Charters work live bait (eels, crabs) or large jigs near structure. They hit hard and run fast.
