# Cobia Fishing in Freeport, TX

One of the most exciting nearshore targets on the Texas Gulf Coast: fast, aggressive fighters you can often watch swim just below the surface.

Cobia are one of the most exciting nearshore targets on the Texas Gulf Coast: fast, aggressive fighters that often swim visibly just below the surface, making them ideal for sight fishing. Freeport's jetties, nearshore wrecks, and the Liberty Shipwreck concentrate cobia each spring as they migrate through on their way north. The limit is strict: 1 fish per day at 40 inches minimum.

## When do cobia show up near Freeport?

Cobia migrate into Texas nearshore waters in spring, typically arriving near the Freeport jetties and offshore structure in April. The strongest action runs April through May, tapering off as fish continue migrating north along the coast. Some fish are caught in nearshore waters through June, particularly around the offshore platforms and artificial reefs south of Freeport.

The spring cobia run is weather-dependent; calm conditions with good visibility are required for effective sight fishing. Book early: April and May charters targeting cobia fill quickly. The full [month-by-month seasons calendar](/seasons/) shows where cobia fit alongside the rest of the Brazosport fishing year.

Freeport mornings in April and May (the spring cobia window) were fishable about 33% of mornings (good outright 12% of the time, across 236 graded mornings), per our [2021–2025 conditions archive](/methodology/).

Sight-fishing for cobia needs calm, clear water, so that lower spring rate is the honest picture: pick your day and stay flexible.

## What is the cobia bag limit in Texas?

The Texas cobia bag limit is [1 fish per angler per day with a 40-inch minimum](https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/fishing/saltwater-fishing/bag-length-limits/cobia-bag-length-limits) total length. This is one of the most restrictive limits in Texas saltwater fishing; any cobia under 40 inches must be released immediately. Most anglers measure carefully before keeping.

[Cobia grow slowly and are vulnerable to overfishing](https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/cobia). The restrictive limit reflects conservation priorities for the Gulf population.

## Where do cobia concentrate near Freeport?

Cobia aggregate around structure: jetties, nearshore platforms, artificial reefs, and shipwrecks. The Freeport South Jetty is a reliable spring cobia spot, with fish visible on the surface near the rocks. Offshore, the [Liberty Shipwreck](/fishing-spots/) at approximately 100 feet depth is a known concentration point.

Cobia also follow large rays and sharks feeding on the surface, a common sight fishing technique is to pole slowly offshore watching for rays, then sight-cast to cobia shadowing them.

## How do you catch cobia on sight?

Sight fishing for cobia is one of the most visual experiences in Gulf fishing. Approach slowly without spooking the fish, cast 5-10 feet ahead of its travel path, and work the lure back toward it. Effective presentations:

- **Bucktail jigs** (3-5 oz, white or chartreuse), the most consistent presentation.
- **Soft plastic swimbaits** on heavy jig heads.
- **Live eels or large pinfish** free-lined on the surface.
- **Crankbaits and topwater plugs** when fish are actively surface feeding.

Cobia hit hard and run fast; 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leader and a stout rod are standard. Once hooked, do not bring a cobia alongside the boat until it is fully exhausted, as they are notorious for explosive last-second runs.

## Are cobia good to eat?

Cobia are considered exceptional table fare: firm, white, buttery meat that holds up to grilling, blackening, and sushi preparation. A single legal fish (40"+) yields substantial fillets. Many Texas anglers rank cobia alongside [red snapper](/species/red-snapper/) as the best-eating offshore species in the Gulf.

Cobia Questions

## Common Questions.

### How do I tell a cobia from a shark on the surface?

On the surface a cobia is easy to mistake for a small shark: both show a dark back and a tall first dorsal. The tells are the cobia’s broad, flat, shovel-shaped head, the pale lateral stripe down its side, and a rounded (not crescent) tail. Cobia also cruise lazily alongside rays rather than circling like a shark. When in doubt, watch the head shape before you cast.

Is the cobia limit one per angler or one per boat?

One per angler per day at a [40-inch minimum](https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/fishing/saltwater-fishing/bag-length-limits/cobia-bag-length-limits), not one per boat, so a four-person trip could legally land four cobia. In practice cobia are caught one or two at a time, and many Freeport anglers release all but a single fish: cobia grow slowly and the Gulf population is tightly managed, which is why the limit is among the most restrictive in Texas saltwater.

What tackle and leader should I have ready for a sight-cast cobia?

Cobia are powerful and dive straight for structure, so go heavier than you think: a 7-foot medium-heavy spinning or conventional outfit, 30-50 lb braid, and a 40-60 lb fluorocarbon or mono leader. Keep a rod rigged and ready while you scan, because the shot at a cruising cobia comes fast and once it sees the boat it often sounds. A large bucktail jig or a live eel or crab thrown ahead of the fish draws the strike.

Why do anglers follow rays to find cobia off Freeport?

Cobia habitually shadow large rays, sharks, and sea turtles, picking off the crabs and baitfish those animals flush off the bottom. A big ray gliding just under the surface is a moving signpost, so captains idle the nearshore water watching for rays and floating debris, then sight-cast to the cobia trailing behind. It is one of the few Gulf fisheries where you hunt the fish visually rather than soak bait.
