# Sheepshead Fishing in Brazosport: The Spring Jetty Run

Sheepshead are the most dependable early-season catch around Freeport. They stack on the jetty rocks in spring, and once you know how to beat their bait-stealing, they are hard to stop.

When the rest of the inshore fishery is still slow in early spring, sheepshead are already stacked on the Surfside and Quintana rocks. This page covers when the spring run turns on, where they hold, the small-hook-and-crab approach that beats their bait-stealing, and the current Texas limits.

## When is sheepshead season at the jetties?

Sheepshead are on the jetty rocks year-round, but spring (March and April) is the peak, when they stage on the rocks to spawn and feed heavily. That spring spawn is what makes them the most dependable early-season catch around Freeport, before the trout and reds fully turn on. They are present on hard structure through the rest of the year too, so a slow winter day at the jetty often still produces sheepshead when little else will.

For the full month-by-month picture, see the [seasons calendar](/seasons/), and for the spring jetty months specifically, the [March](/seasons/march/) and [April](/seasons/april/) entries.

## Where do sheepshead hold near Freeport?

Sheepshead hold tight to hard structure: the Surfside and Quintana jetty rocks, bridge and dock pilings, the Brazos River mouth, and any submerged rock or reef. They sit within inches of the structure, grazing on barnacles and small crabs, so your bait has to be right against the rock to get bit.

On the jetty, fish the down-current side and let the bait settle into the gaps between the boulders where sheepshead feed. The same rock that holds them is also where you lose rigs, so expect to re-tie. For the full rundown of jetty and structure access, see the [Brazosport fishing spots](/fishing-spots/).

## How do you catch a bait-stealing sheepshead?

The answer is a small, sharp hook, a crab bait, and an early hookset. Sheepshead have a small mouth and strong crushing teeth, so they nibble a bait off the hook before you feel a solid bite. The local standard is a fiddler crab or a piece of live shrimp on a small (size 1 or 2) hook, fished tight to the rock.

- **Bait:** fiddler crabs first, live shrimp second. A crab is hard for a sheepshead to strip cleanly off a small hook.
- **Hook:** small and sharp. A big hook gets cleaned every cast; a small one finds the corner of their mouth.
- **Hookset:** set early, on the first tap. Waiting for a "real" bite means waiting for an empty hook.
- **Rig:** just enough weight to hold against the current, fished right against the rock where they graze.

## Bag and size limits

- Bag limit**5 per person per day**

- Season**Open year-round**

Sheepshead Questions

## Common Questions.

### When is sheepshead season at the jetties near Freeport?

Sheepshead are on the jetty rocks year-round, but spring (March and April) is the peak, when they stage to spawn. That is the most dependable early-season jetty bite around Freeport.

What is the best bait for sheepshead?

Fiddler crabs and live shrimp are the standard sheepshead baits, fished tight to the rock or piling on a small, sharp hook. Sheepshead crush barnacles and crabs with human-like teeth, so a crab is hard for them to pass up.

Why do sheepshead steal bait so easily?

Sheepshead have a small mouth and strong crushing teeth, so they can nibble a bait off the hook before you feel a solid bite. Use a small, sharp hook, keep the line tight to the structure, and set the hook early on the first tap.

What is the sheepshead limit in Texas?
