Fishing Tournaments in Freeport.
The Brazosport area runs a full slate of fishing tournaments, from the 75-plus-year-old Fishin' Fiesta to family inshore derbies and a kids' event. Dates shift year to year, so confirm the current-year schedule on each official site before you plan around one.
- July · Freeport
Fishin' Fiesta
Freeport's flagship fishing event and the area's biggest, running every July since 1947. Both inshore and offshore divisions award the largest fish across categories from redfish and flounder to offshore pelagics, and the weekend wraps a full community festival around the contest: a barbecue cook-off, a carnival, a coastal expo, and a youth tournament. Held at the Freeport Municipal Park complex.

River's End Family Fishing Tournament
A long-running fall tournament run by the River's End Volunteer Fire Department (around its 27th year), built for families fishing the inshore bite. Categories cover redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and croaker, with prizes for the top three in each. Timed for the October fall run, just before the November flounder closure.

Take-A-Child Fishing Tournament
A youth tournament hosted by Port Freeport for kids ages 3 to 14, held at Freeport Municipal Park. Entry is a couple of canned goods per child (benefiting a local food pantry), with t-shirts and giveaways for the first several hundred entrants and awards for the top three in two age groups. A low-pressure way to get first-time anglers on the water.

Texas Billfish Classic
An annual summer offshore tournament targeting billfish (catch-and-release), tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi, drawing big-water boats from across the upper Texas Gulf Coast. A serious offshore event rather than a family inshore one. Confirm the current host and dates before planning, as offshore classics shift venues year to year.
When is fishing tournament season in Freeport?
The Brazosport tournament calendar peaks in summer and early fall. Fishin' Fiesta anchors July, the youth Take-A-Child tournament runs in the warm months, and the River's End family tournament lands in October, timed to the fall inshore run just before the flounder closure on November 1. Offshore classics like the Texas Billfish Classic run through the summer blue-water season. See the month-by-month seasonal calendar for what's biting around each event.
Do you need a fishing license to enter a tournament?
Yes. Tournament entry does not replace a personal fishing license. Every angler 17 or older still needs a valid Texas fishing license with a saltwater endorsement, and all state bag, size, and season rules apply during a tournament exactly as they do any other day. Full breakdown in our Texas fishing license guide.
Can first-timers and families fish these tournaments?
Absolutely. The Take-A-Child Fishing Tournament exists specifically for kids ages 3 to 14, and the River's End event is built around family inshore fishing for redfish, trout, and flounder. If you're new to the area, the simplest way in is to book a local charter captain who knows the tournament waters, or read how to plan your trip first.
