Flounder Gigging Charters in Freeport and Surfside Beach

A guided night on the Brazosport flats, in the window before Texas closes flounder harvest on November 1.

Flounder gigging is a night trip. The boat runs shallow water with lights over the side, the crew spots flounder lying on the bottom, and the captain puts the boat on the fish. Out of Freeport and Surfside Beach the season peaks in late September and October, before the state closes flounder harvest entirely on November 1.

What is flounder gigging?

Flounder gigging is harvesting flounder by hand from a lit, shallow-draft boat at night instead of by rod and reel. Flounder settle onto sand and mud flats after dark and hold still, so the trip is a slow, quiet drift along a shoreline rather than a day of casting. It suits people who do not fish much: there is no cast to learn and the fish are visible before anyone commits to one.

The catch is governed by the same rules as rod-and-reel flounder fishing, so a gigging night is capped at the 5-fish daily bag with a 15-inch minimum. Gigging is a harvest method, not a catch-and-release one, which is part of why the state manages the season as tightly as it does.

When is the best time to gig flounder in Texas?

Late September and October, because Texas closes all flounder harvest from November 1 through December 14 to protect the fall spawning migration. That closure applies to every method, gigging included, so the productive fall weeks sit in front of it rather than during it. Trips resume December 15.

Within that window the night matters more than the date. Gigging depends on clear, calm water you can see through, so the good nights follow a front once the wind lays down and the bays settle. Check what's biting in Freeport right now before you pick one, and book with some slack in your schedule rather than a single locked date.

Do you need a license to gig flounder?

Yes. Everyone 17 and older needs a Texas fishing license with a saltwater endorsement, and the captain's license does not cover passengers. There is no separate gigging permit. Buy it before the trip, because the boat leaves the dock after dark and nothing is open. Our charter licensing guide covers the packages and who is exempt.

What does a flounder gigging trip cost?

A guided night gigging trip for two runs $650 – $800 for about five hours on the water, with each additional angler adding roughly $100. A longer combo night that fishes rod and reel first and then gigs runs $1,100 – $1,300 for two. Those are current local market research ranges for the Freeport and Surfside Beach area, not a quote from any one operator.

Gigging usually prices above a comparable inshore trip because the boat burns power all night for the lights and the captain is working a narrower seasonal window. The estimator on this page turns your group size and trip length into a range; the captain you are matched with sets the final number.

What a guided trip includes

The captain supplies everything the method needs, which is the main reason first-timers book one instead of assembling it themselves:

  • The shallow-draft boat and the captain who knows the flats after dark.
  • Submersible lights and the power to run them for the night.
  • Gigs, a cooler, and ice for the trip.
  • The vessel's own licensing and safety gear.

You bring your Texas saltwater license, closed-toe shoes, and a jacket, since the water pulls the temperature down well below what the forecast says. Fish cleaning at the dock is common but usually quoted separately, so ask when you book.

Where do gigging charters run?

We only refer captains running out of Freeport and Surfside Beach, working the Brazosport bay system. That is the whole footprint of this page: the flats and marsh edges reachable from those two ramps.

Galveston, Matagorda, Rockport, and Port Aransas all have their own gigging operators and their own bay systems, and if that is where you are headed, book locally there. We are not a booking service for those ports and make no offer for them. If gigging is not what you are after, the daytime trip types are compared on the Freeport fishing charters page.

All regulations are subject to change. See the full Brazosport regulations table, and confirm current rules at tpwd.texas.gov before fishing. This site is a referral resource and operates no boats.

Gigging Questions

Before You Book.

Is flounder gigging legal in Texas?

No. Texas closes all flounder harvest from November 1 through December 14, gigging included, to protect the fall spawning run. Guided gigging trips out of Freeport run September through October and again from December 15.

Do I need my own boat or lights to go gigging?

What does a flounder gigging trip cost near Freeport?

Current local market research puts a guided night gigging trip for two at $650 – $800 for about five hours, with extra anglers adding $100 each, and a fishing-plus-gigging combo for two at $1,100 – $1,300. Use the estimator on this page for your group size; the captain sets the final price.
