May delivers the last strong push of the cobia run. Fish are still cruising the jetties and nearshore platforms, and late-season cobia tend to run large. King mackerel fishing peaks around the nearshore reefs and rigs, with trolled ribbonfish and live bait drawing savage strikes. Spanish mackerel, pompano, and jack crevalle fill in the nearshore mix, and calm green-water mornings at the jetty are prime.
This is the month the offshore door swings open. Settling weather and warming water mean the first dependable blue-water windows of the year, and Freeport is one of the closer Texas ports to deep water since the Gulf drops off quickly off Brazosport. Early-season runs target the floaters and weed lines for mahi-mahi, with the full offshore picture filling in once the red snapper season opens June 1.
